Prorocentrum mexicanum is a photosynthetic planktonic species that has golden chloroplasts, a round central pyrenoid, and a large round nucleus located posteriorly. The cells are oval, and in valvae view the ventral curvature is more pronounced than the dorsal (D-shaped cell). It has a length of 36 to 42 µm (mean, 39 ± 0.31 µm), width of 24 to 30.8 µm (mean, 27.8 ±0.31 µm), and a cell ratio (length:width = l:w) of 1.4. The cells are lenticular in lateral view with the anterior region deeper than the posterior region. A depression in the anterior region of the right theca bears the periflagellar area, which has eight platelets surrounding the auxiliary and flagellar pores (of different size).
